Swelling behaviors of non-ionic poly(acrylamide) gel

The swelling behaviors of non-ionic poly(acrylamide) gel are studied in six binary mixed solvent systems of water and the organic solvent. It is found that the swelling curves of the gel are superposed onto a single master curve. The only exception is the swelling curve of the gel that is measured in the mixed solvent of water and methanol. These results are discussed in terms of the mean field theory of the volume phase transition. The results indicate that the dynamical cluster structure of water in the binary mixed solvents plays essential roles for the volume phase transition of non-ioinic hydro-gel of acrylamide.
