Synthesis and ion complex formation of stimul-responsive polymers with functional groups forming hydrogen bonds by living cationic polymerization

Various copolymers with pendant primary amino groups and narrow MWDs have been synthesized by living cationic polymerization in the presence of an added base. A key step of the synthesis is polymerization of a phthalimide-containing vinyl ether, from which nearly monodispersed polymers have never been obtained. Recently we found that base-stabilized living system realize its living cationic polymerization, giving well-defined polymers with a very narrow MWD (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.1). The formation of ion complex of the product polymers with carboxy-containing polymers yielded novel types of self-assemblies with the size of 30-50 um. Furthermore, the amino-type copolymers were compared with various polymers with other polar functional groups that can form hydrogen bondings.
