Synthesis of T-shaped rod-coil copolymer from oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) and poly(ethylene oxide) and its self-assembling behavior

T-shaped rod-coil molecules consisting of oligo(p-phenylenevinylene)(OPV) as rigid polymer and poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO) as flexible one were synthesized according to Scheme 1. Coupling reaction of 1a and 2 has not proceeded at all. Then coupling reaction between 1b and 2 was carried out. As a result, 3 of light yellow tar was obtained. The less reactivity of la was due to the large steric hindrance of large atomic radius of I. The synthesis of the T-shaped rod-coil molecules(4a, 4b) were carried out by Heck reaction between styrene and 3a, 3b. As a result, 4a and 4b were obtained. However, about 10 % of impurities were included. Purification of 4a and 4b by column chromatography were difficult. Therefore, in order to solve this problem, we considered the following synthetic scheme; first, synthesizing OPV and then, introducing PEO.
