N2 - China’s shipbuilding industry has undergone remarkable progress since 1979 when China adopted the reform and open-up policy. This paper attempts to examine China’s shipbuilding industry, analyse its rise and the key factors behind, examine the challenges facing China’s shipbuilding industry, and probe the outlook of the industry. The objective is to gain a clearer understanding of the fundamental problems of China’s shipbuilding industry and the actions being taken by the industry to overcome the problems. The conclusion it draws is that China’s shipbuilding industry has fulfilled its key role in supporting China’s continuous development; however how it can continue to flourish in the new digital and green era is yet unclear.
