We analyzed the relation among the four indices of stand density for well-managed plantations of old Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D.Don), and investigated the reference value of indices correlated with the degree of crowing. The analysis included the relative spacing index( Sr),a yield index based on the stand density control diagram(Ry),the ratio of mean height to diameter(H/D) and the percentage of crown length(CLp). As a result, the relation between Ry and Sr is the strongest of all relations. The index value of the degree of crowing for Ry, that is 0.8, reveals the equivalent of 14.8% of Sr. The results of previous studies revealed the same results, and the 15% of Sr is suggested for the value of the degree of crowing.
