FDG-PET was reported to be useful for predicting prognosis in head and neck cancer. We examined whether pretreatment SUV (max) in the primary lesion of FDG-PET could be a prognostic value for the survival and laryngeal preservation in the “chemoradioselection” strategy for 39 patients with hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma in the National Kyushu Cancer Center. As a result, pretreatment SUV (max) in hypopharyngeal carcinoma was a prognostic factor not for the 3-year survival rate, but for the 3-year laryngeal preservation rate, and for the response of primary lesion to 40Gy radiation in the algorithm of chemoradioselection.
