From the viewpoint of safety and stable production at open cut coal mines, it is quite important to ensure highwall, footwall and lowwall stability, until backfilling begins after coal extraction. Especially in coal mines with steep dipping seams, as the pit depth increases, footwall slope failure can occur. Also, dumpwall failure can easily occur due to weakness of fragmented rocks. This kind of failure threatens safety, stable production, and successful rehabilitation. Though a lot of studies for the highwall stability have been done, there are few studies focused on lowwall and dumpwall stabilities for the coal mines with steep dipping seems. Therefore this paper discusses footwall stability with steep dipping seams and dumpwall stability in open cut coal mines, by means of finite element modeling.
