Introduced Functional patterns (FunPat) are new sensitive areas for distribution centroid finding. Different density functions of the distributed phenomena result in different patterns. There are three general methods for finding the functional patterns used for high resolution and linear position sensing of a source. These patterns can act as wide channels in position sensitive detectors. Simple evaluation of the position information, high resolution (about 100 μm), minimum effects of thermal noise and good count rate capability enable the resulted method to have many applications in high energy physics and nuclear radiation position sensing. In present work, results of fundamental studies for the patterned position sensitive detectors are described. Computer simulations have almost confirmed 10% improvement in linearity of the position sensing using these functional patterns.
