The method is proposed to calculate the contact point deviations from the plane of action of gear pairs due to tooth profile errors and tooth deflections under load. Transmission errors under several loads are calculated using this method. The influences of deviations of contact points from the plane of actions, that is to say the changes of loading points, and the load sharing on the transmission characteristics are investigated, comparing the calculated transmission errors with experimental ones. In the calculated result, contact points deviate from the plane of action according to tooth profile modification and load. The largest difference between the theoretical contact point locations and the actual ones occurs at the starting point of modification, and it gradually decreases according to the movement of contact points to the starting or ending point of contact. The heavier the applied loads become, the period of double tooth contact becomes longer and that of single tooth contact becomes shorter due to the tooth-tip-edge contact. For the gear pair having its profile modification starting point near the transit point from double tooth contact to single tooth contact, amplitude of transmission errors can be reduced to a minimum at the load that the actual contact ratio agrees with the theoretical contact ratio. When the actual contact ratio is larger than the theoretical one, the period of tooth-tip-edge contact occurs.
