Bidens pilosa extract has an antioxidative effect and has recently been used for the treatment of livedo vasculopathy as a folk medicine. We investigated the effects of Bidens pilosa extract on human cultured keratinocytes. Bidens pilosa extract induced nuclear translocation of aryl hydrocarbon receptor from cytoplasm. The AhR activation up-regulated anti-oxidative signaling pathways such as nuclear factor-erythroid-2-related factor-2 and NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase 1. These findings may explain, at least in part, the anti-oxidative mechanism of Bidens pilosa extract.
