Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), also known as vascular permeability factor (VPF), is a specific growth factor for vascular endothelial cells. As the concentration of VEGF in intraocular fluid reportedly increases in proliferative diabetic retinopathy, VEGF has been postulated as one of the major retinal angiogenic factors in diabetic retinopathy. The basic processes of diabetic retinopathy are characterized by hyperpermeability of retinal vessels, occlusion of retinal vessels and retinal neovascularization. In this report, we emphasize that VEGF is associated with these three basic processes, and that retinal glial cells play an important role in VEGF expression. We also show the relation between the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGE) and VEGF expression in human diabetic retinas.
