Verification of water-equivalent model for calculation of multiple scattering effects in simplified Monte Carlo dose calculation

A water-equivalent model of heterogeneous materials is employed in a simplified Monte Carlo dose calculation method. Using the model, calculation of multiple scattering effects, not in an actual material but in water, is conducted. In this paper, the effects calculated using the model were compared with results calculated in an actual material and their influence in terms of dose predictions due to the difference was verified. We found that it was appropriate for multiple scattering calculations in proton dose predictions to use the water-equivalent model.
