The impact of water vapor on the catalytic activities of CO oxidation over Cl-containing Pt/CeO2 was investigated by combining catalytic activity tests, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, in-situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and lowenergy ion scattering. Water vapor reduced the density of chlorine adsorbates near the Pt-CeO2 interface. The utilization of hydroxyl groups near the cleaner Pt-CeO2 interfaces enhanced the catalytic activity of the Cl-containing catalyst to a level equivalent to that of a Cl-free catalyst under dry conditions.
