Blockfields have been mentioned in the literature for about 100 years and throughout have been a source of contention in terms of their age and weathering origin. In this paper, the evidence is presented from investigation on blockfields in Nagano area, which lies in Northern of Kyushu Island in Japan. Weathering conditions and the geotechnical properties of fresh and weathered rocks have been evaluated; the spatial relation between blockfields and tunnel has been clarified. It is concluded that Nagano blockfields have been formed from weathering of Hirao granodiorite rocks. The effects of highway tunneling construction on blockfields are also discussed.
