A series of NiMo/Al2O3 catalysts were examined in the desulfurization of 4,6-DMDBT in H2 or H2/H2S varying contents of Ni. In addition, the surface species of Ni and Mo were studied by XPS to find the origin of the catalytic activity or deactivity which are influenced by the atmospheres. In general, the study showed that the deactivation of NiMo catalyst is an attribute of the extensive sulfiding state of Mo and reduction state of Ni species on the catalyst surface.
